The Souks
The souks north of Djemaa el-Fna are organised by craft type — dyers in one alley, leather workers in another, metalworkers and lantern-makers elsewhere — in a spatial organisation that has persisted for centuries. Navigating them without a guide is possible but involves considerable disorientation; navigating with one reveals the logic of the layout and enables the kind of authentic craftsman interaction that produces genuinely interesting purchases. Bahia Palace and Saadian Tombs
Bahia Palace, a nineteenth-century grand vizier’s residence with an extraordinary sequence of tiled and stuccoed rooms opening onto shaded garden courtyards, and the Saadian Tombs — an ornate sixteenth-century royal mausoleum sealed for centuries and only rediscovered in 1917 — provide the medina’s two most impressive formal architectural experiences. Both are within walking distance of Djemaa el-Fna and manageable within a full-day itinerary.
Majorelle Garden
The Majorelle Garden, designed by French painter Jacques Majorelle and later owned by Yves Saint Laurent, is in the new city rather than the medina — a botanical garden of extraordinary density and colour, with a cobalt blue studio building at its centre housing the Berber Museum.
