Ait Ben Haddou
Sahara — Wikipedia, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a compacted ksar of earthen towers on the bank of the Ounila River, built over centuries as a fortified stop on the trans-Saharan caravan route between the desert and Marrakech. It has been used as a film set in dozens of productions, from Lawrence of Arabia to Game of Thrones, and is widely recognised without visitors necessarily knowing where they have seen it. The walk through the narrow earthen passageways to the hilltop granary takes about an hour and rewards the climb with views across the valley and the modern village on the opposite bank. Ouarzazate and the Film Studios
Ouarzazate, thirty kilometres east of Ait Ben Haddou, is often described as the Hollywood of Africa — its Atlas Corporation Studios have hosted productions from Gladiator to The Mummy, and the tour of the studio backlots and sets, available to visitors, gives a behind-the-scenes sense of how the region’s distinctive desert aesthetic has been exploited internationally. The Taourirt Kasbah, a massive earthen palace complex near the city centre, is a second worthwhile stop for its architecture and the live craftspeople still working within its walls.
Tizi n’Tichka Pass
The drive over Tizi n’Tichka at 2,260 metres offers views in both directions on a clear day — south toward the pre-Saharan plain and north toward the Marrakech basin — and the pass itself, with its roadside stalls selling Atlas fossils and minerals, makes a good rest stop on the outbound drive. The road is well-maintained and passable year-round except after exceptional snowfall in January and February.
Is One Day Enough?
A long day from Marrakech — departing by 7am and returning by 7pm — allows comfortable time at both Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate with the pass crossing, though some travellers prefer to overnight in Ouarzazate and return the following morning.
