The route between Argan oil — Wikipedia and Atlas Mountains — Wikipedia via the Saharan south is the most complete single Morocco itinerary available, connecting two of the country’s most important imperial cities through a sequence of landscapes — High Atlas mountains, pre-Saharan kasbahs, the Dades and Todra gorges, the Saharan dunes, and the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas — that cover the full geographic range of the country in a single continuous journey.
Day One: High Atlas Crossing and Ait Ben Haddou
The journey south from Marrakech begins with the crossing of the High Atlas via the Tizi n’Tichka pass at 2,260 metres — the highest paved road in North Africa. The descent into the Draa Valley brings the first kasbahs and palm groves, followed by the stop at Ait Ben Haddou, the UNESCO-listed fortified village that anchors the pre-Saharan landscape. Most travellers on our 3-Day Desert Tour from Marrakech (Round Trip) allow two to three hours here before continuing to Ouarzazate for the night.
Day Two: Dades Valley and Todra Gorge
East of Ouarzazate, the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs passes through the Skoura palm grove, the distinctive rock formations of the Dades Valley, and into the Todra Gorge — where sheer limestone walls rise hundreds of metres above a narrow river canyon. This stretch is among the most visually varied in Morocco, combining earthen architecture, agricultural oases, and dramatic geology within a single day’s drive. An overnight near Tinghir or in the Dades area suits a 3-Day Desert Tour: Fes to Marrakech format.
Day Three: The Desert at Erg Chebbi
The route continues through Erfoud and Rissani to Merzouga, the small village at the foot of Erg Chebbi’s orange dunes. The camel trek out to the desert camp at sunset, the overnight in the dunes, and the sunrise return are the trip’s centrepiece — the moment most travellers describe as the defining image of their Morocco experience. Stars over the desert on a clear night, with no artificial lighting for many kilometres in any direction, add a further dimension that no itinerary description adequately conveys.
Day Four: Ziz Valley and the Middle Atlas
The return to Fes takes the northern route through the Ziz Valley oasis, the cedar forests near Ifrane where Barbary macaques are frequently seen by the roadside, and eventually into Fes from the south. The contrast between the Saharan south of the previous days and the cool, forested Middle Atlas is one of the more striking transitions in the itinerary. Our 10-Day Morocco Imperial Cities Tour from Casablanca covers this four-day arc with a well-paced structure.
Extending the Route
A three-day version of the same route cuts the valley stops in favour of a direct approach; a five-day version adds an extra overnight in Ouarzazate for the Atlas Studios and the Taourirt Kasbah. The route can also be driven in reverse — Fes to Marrakech — without losing any of its character. Browse our 4-Day Desert Tour from Marrakech (Round Trip) for the full range of options in both directions.
